Datei-Endung AVI wird von Audio Video Interleave-Dateien. Diese Dateien enthalten Multimedia-Streams in AVI-Container-Format, das ursprünglich von Microsoft Corporation in den 1992 auf der Grundlage von "Resource Interchange File Format" (RIFF). Dieses Format erlaubt die Speicherung von Audio-und Video-Daten in der gleichen Datei für die gleichzeitige Wiedergabe während der Kompression mit unterschiedlichen Codecs für jeden Stream. Dies wird erreicht durch Interleaving kleinen Blöcken (sogenannte Chunks) von Audio-und Video-Daten in der Datei. AVI-Dateien können mit vielen verschiedenen vidoe Komprimierungsalgorithmen einschließlich: Intel Real Time (Indeo), Cinepak, Motion JPEG, MPEG Editable, VDOWave, ClearVideo, RealVideo, QPEG, MPEG-4 usw. Eeach Codec ist mit einem Vier-Buchstaben-Code ( FourCC)

DV-AVI-Dateien sind in der Regel von miniDV Band-Camcordern. Diese Dateien können intarframe aber nicht Interframe Kompression produziert Systeme, die große Dateien (in der Regel zehn oder Gigabyte Gigabyte groß) mit sehr guter Bildqualität.
